YOUNG FORMULA FORD STARS DOING IT FOR MUM ON MOTHER’S DAY
13-05-2006
Up and coming Formula Ford stars Samantha Reid and Todd Fiore have dedicated the Mother’s Day weekend round at Barbagallo this weekend to their mum’s.

While the stars of tomorrow push their Fiesta powered Formula Ford’s to the limit on the track, off the track much of the time it’s mum who plays not only the role of mum but also includes confidant, manager, tactician and chef.

Local Western Australian driver Todd Fiore will be pushing hard for a win at his home track to say thanks to his mum, Josie, who has supported his career since he began karting in 1998.

“Mum has always supported my racing, and although she worries a bit when I’m racing, she’s always been supportive of me and it would be great to get a win this weekend at our home track on Mother’s Day,” Todd Fiore said before qualifying this morning.

Fiore, currently fifth in the championship after round one, has his sights firmly set on a win for his mum this weekend and has no doubts about his aspirations for the season ahead.

“It’s a really tough and tight field this year, but I am going to be pushing hard for race wins this season.”

“The new Fiesta engines are fantastic and have a lot more grunt which is great for the series…it’s great to have that extra speed out on the track although I’m not sure mum is as excited about it as I am!”

Samantha Reid, the only female driver in the national Formula Ford series is also keen for a strong performance after a solid 15th in her series debut at round one in Adelaide.

“Mum doesn’t get to come to the rounds too often so it would be great to get a strong result with her here at the track,” Samantha Reid said.

Reid, the only female driver in the championship and the only female driver in the country to be supported by CAMS in 2004, 2005 and 2006, is keen to make a strong impression on the weekend, although Beverley, Samantha’s mum is just happy to see her get through the race unscathed.

“I guess it is a mum thing but I worry the whole time she is out on the track!” Beverley Reid said this morning.

“I love to see her up the front pushing for race wins but another part of me just wants her to be safe, but she’s always been a proactive person and I wouldn’t want Sam any other way. I’m proud that she goes outside the circle and isn’t afraid to get out there and race in what has been predominantly a male dominated sport.”

The first race of round two of the Australian Formula Ford Championship is on this afternoon at 2.10pm before the final two races tomorrow at Barbagallo Raceway.
